THE LETTER

In the very midst of her darkest days
Katherine walks through his door and brings
Several boxes along with her
To gather Michael's things

She handles each shred and scrap
As though it were made of gold
Trying not to think of him
Lying lifeless and alone

She aches to hold him one last time
But her eyes won't let her see
The shell of what was her precious son
And what never again will be

With every garment she gently folds
His scent soon fills the room
Her fortitude begins to fail
And she's overcome with gloom

She reaches for his Bible
Desperate to find some hope
From between its earmarked pages
Slips a single envelope

She does not hesitate to peer inside
It was clearly meant for no other
For on its front, in his own hand
Rests a single loving word....”Mother”

She opens it so tenderly
Her dear babe's final note
Wanting so badly to preserve
Every penstroke he has wrote

“Dearest Mother”, it begins
“Should you find this in your hands
Then I have gone to be with God
And now walk the Promised Lands”

“You must not mourn for what is past
Remember it with love
You watched over me so very well
Now I'll watch you from above”

“As you know by now, I've left to you
My children to care for
My reasoning is simple
No one could love them more”

“I hope that they will help you heal
As you take my place
And when you miss me, look to them
And you will see my face”

“Life was not always kind to me
I've struggled through and through
I'm certain I'd not have come this far
If it hadn't been for you”

“You didn't carry me just nine months
As is nature's way
But you walked me through it all
Every hardship, every day”

“So, Mother, please, have no regret
Do not second guess
I tell you true, with my last breath
I love you, and you've been the best”

She folds the letter delicately
In no box will it depart
She places it where its author remains
Closest to her heart

Please let me know if you like it

Bonnie
